Colour of Quantum, 14th December

Label: Murmur Records Japan
Formats: CDR, Download
Released: 14th December, 2011

Lucia H Chung + Yuki Aida

Lucia H. Chung is a Taiwanese sound artist quickly becoming known as one of London’s top minimalists.

Yuki Aida is the Japanese sound artist, composer, guitarist and label owner who is building a diverse catalogue of releases that include, electronica, noise, drone and dance music.

This collaboration was born from a theme that is also its title “Colour of Quantum.” The record is a direct outgrowth of a series of talks between the artists that developed like a chain reaction with each one producing one disc while also contributing to and altering their colleague’s work.

This limited production run of 80 copies includes serial numbers and recordings of live performances from Tokyo and London as bonus tracks.

Lucia H. Chung solo performance, 20/11/2011 at Servant Jazz Quarters, Dalston, London

Lucia H. Chung will be doing a solo performance as part of the solos series of events held in various small and intimate venues in London, most often the venue Madame Lillies. However, this time the solos event will be held at the Servant Jazz Quarters in Dalston, London.
This is Lucia’s third solo live performance, and what with the build up toward the split release ‘Colour of Quantum’ released on Murmur Records, with label owner Yuki Aida, Sunday evening promises more edgy but beautiful high frequency sounds.

Hear One Near and Think of the Other Review

We received an amazing review of our latest album on Dragon’s Eye Recordings from The Field Reporter, a group of great minds with a refreshing take on reviewing sound and music that’s evident from what reviews we have read so far. We are very pleased to share with you this review and also encourage you to visit their website to read the other great reviews.

Thank you to The Field Reporter for taking the time to listen carefully to our work and appreciating it. :)

“A moment remembered is a moment anew.”. This is the first sentence on the text for Hear one near and think of the other a release by Mimosa|Moize a project of artists Lucia H. Chung from Taiwan and Martin J. Thompson from the UK. This release documents a performance the artists did on an exhibition where different spaces in the gallery served as extensions of the human ears addressing the notion of moment through time and space.

On their website in the liner notes Mimosa|Moize write about this work “A present moment rolling into and inspiring the next. A moment existing in-between the passing and the approaching, linked yet unique.”; time and space seems to be subjects of concern by many sound artists on many works: sound affects our perceptual space and our perceptual time in a very strong and non visual manner and this double and independent experience (physical and conscient), that Pierre Henry addressed through the separation of the reduced hearing from the the casual hearing, becomes strongly poetic when Mimosa|Moize invites us to this path that is only passable in our conscience.

On Hear one near and think of the other the formal aesthetics considerations are very specific. Small needly crisp textures (made with what seems like processed field recordings) combined with sine waves create this subtle high-pitched sonorities that build an emotional space of levity and light that blurs any physical spatial notion that the listener can establish and instead submerges him into a microscopic world of involving, invasive and tiny sounds. They are moments on the piece that are inaudible and work like some sort of silences a formal aspect taken into consideration that we will later articulate in the review. Through the piece they occur some deep heavy low frequencies depicting a physical spatiality that confront the spatial-less sounds addressed before in the review. This dronings sounds help depicting a three-dimensional blue print of the physical surrounding adding a new dimension to the work. Also a detail of importance is how the sounds seem to occur on different places, sometimes the sounds feel right in front of the listener, some other times they sound like they were occurring behind a wall; this dynamic proposes some sort of acoustical architecture that brings into this work the purpose and experience behind the original exhibition and addresses the capacity of sound to depict actual architectural perceptions of sound in terms of multiple spatialities.

Regarding the temporal aspects of this work the constant fading and the inaudible and/or silent moments helps depicting this architectural space with different rooms using narrative as some sort of path across this places. The narrative seems to work merely for spacial purposes linking time and space into one single experience.

Hear one near and think of the other is a very successful work in terms of how the thematic problem was established into a relevant context and how it was instrumentally solved with sound as medium and matter.

Hear One Near and Think of the Other, Out Now!

Our new release ‘Hear One Near and Think of the Other’ is now out on Dragon’s Eye Recordings. It is a 9 track, CDR edition of 200, with beautiful cover artwork provided by Kimvi Nguyen.

Hear One Near and Think of the Other (performance) was a durational work at MK Gallery inviting the experience and notion of a moment through sound, space and time. Two large spaces inhabiting a single speaker each, were joined by the performing mimosa|moize and a third space. Visitors were invited to explore and relish in the moment found both in each space and sound experienced within the gallery. Each gallery space served as an architectural extension to the ears of the performers, allowing sound positioning to both follow and depart from those moving within and around the gallery space.

Hear One Near and Think of the Other stands as a recent work in an ongoing interest in the notion of a moment. Originally a concept created for a live performance, this composition variation further explores the perception and interaction of a moment through sound specifically. In utilising the documentation of the previous performance, these moments passed are revisited through the act of listening and remembering. This process is to then form the foundation and building towards the creation of new moments, yet staying faithful to both the past and to the approaching.

Audio Screening & Conversation - Soundfjord Gallery

In response to an invitation to hosting an audio screening at SoundFjord, artist Lucia H Chung conducts an exchange project with artists who have inspired her artistic journey in sound and music making.

This 8-week long exchange between Muki Yui, i8u and Lucia started from a collective contemplation on Yoko Ono’s instruction Secret Piece (1953), first sent by Lucia to the other artists respectively. Responding to the material that they received, Miki and i8u returned their thoughts in the form of text, image and sound. Through this to and fro correspondence, the three artists shared a close and intimate conversation on time, space, memory and sound. This journey of exchange will be presented as a collaborative work that is exclusive to SoundFjord.

The event will also be the premiere of an audiovisual work created out of a collaboration between Peter Hodgkinson and Lucia H Chung.

Finally, Lucia will talk about her forthcoming solo work on murmur records in Japan.

re/flux, Sublimated Landscape, Sonic Topology

One of our earliest and most cherished works 3+1 (2008) has been selected by Soundfjord for the audio/visual event re/flux, as part of the ICA’s Everything event. Using “the notion of ‘sublimation’ as a point of departure, the screening has been expanded to encompass an exploration of sonic topology” - Helen Frosi, Soundfjord.
Other works featured are by artists:
Clinker, Heribert Friedl, i8u, Mem1, Robert Crouch, Steve Roden, Sublamp, Tomas Phillips, TU M’, Yann Novak and many more.

This evening event runs Saturday 16th July 20:00 - 01:00 and has a free entry.

3+1 is a sound work attempting to bring the listener’s presence and placement in space into focus, standing as a literal connection to the sound work as it is experienced.
Through its relentless repetition, 3+1 creates a relaxing yet anxiety filled experience of sound.
The subtle changes that occur are found and related to the temporal nature of each sound as it is experienced in relation to the position of another, and further, to the position of the listener themselves.

Also, we are extremely happy to have the incredibly talented artist Kimvi Nguyen supply some beautiful artwork for the cover, I think you will agree it looks stunning. This release will be a limited edition of 200, and our first CDR format for DER, we are obviously very excited.

Hear One Near and Think of the Other

mimosa|moize performance at MK Gallery.
Thursday 24 March / Performance starts at 6.30pm / Free, donations welcome.

A moment remembered is a moment anew. A collection of selected moments becoming the foundation and building of a new moment. A present moment rolling into and inspiring the next. A moment existing in-between the passing and the approaching, linked yet unique.

‘Hear One Near and Think of the Other’ is inspired by the small and seemingly insignificant moments experienced and shared by us all. A work aiming to share, contribute and take pleasure in the small, the brief, the passing, the approaching and the now. Through utilizing two physically separated spaces, artist duo mimosa|moize will share and play with the sound of these spaces experienced inside the Milton Keynes Gallery. Throughout the duration of their performance, visitors are invited to recall and experience, revisit and relish the moment.

SoundFjord Opening + The Domestic Soundscape Blog

Prior to this website update, we were mentioned in Felicity Fords lovely write up of the opening of London’s sound art gallery, SoundFjord. Although a little behind now, we still wanted to mention this article as Felicity was particularly supportive of our performance which really made our day. Please do visit Felicity’s blog to read the whole article as her writing is always enjoyable and compelling. Thank you again Felicity, and indeed it was great to see you again that day.

“I particularly enjoyed their mimosa | moize performance at the SoundFjord launch. They used a lot of soft and delicate sonic textures and mixed them in a very sensitive way; it was like a sound-collage made from electric feathers and a trace of it has stayed with me, like a temporary transfer tattoo; all filmy and light and detailed.
I also found the configuration of their performance oddly compelling. Normally I dislike the spectacle of someone twiddling about on a laptop as a performance format, but there was something very engaging about the way these two sat opposite each other, weaving a mix together through their computers. During their performance they were very still, both staring intently ahead into their screens and making only the slightest of movements with the mousepads to generate this very subtle, shared soundscape. The way they sat and communicated through all those electronic circuits reminded me of our very human use of computers and how many connections we make across cyberspace through this interface. In their hands the laptop becomes a delicate instrument, a thing we use for talking to each other in many languages. Sometimes even a language of sweepy, electronic shufflings. I really liked it. Here they are, setting up. I was too transfixed during the performance to photograph it.” - Felicity Ford

seiren now available for the uk listeners

We are happy to announce that we have brought the sale of our debut album seiren to the U.K. Up until now it has only been available from abroad, and obviously this can mean that it costs quite a bit on postage. There are now two places where you can buy seiren in the U.K. One is right here at mimosamoize.com, in our little and aptly named smlsnds shop, where we will be selling all our releases in the future. Also, the lovely Helen and Andy from SoundFjord, the only sound-art-dedicated gallery in London, will also be holding a small stock in the gallery, of which we are very thankful. Although there will only be a small stock held at both places, it is not limited. So, if seiren is sold out in either places, be sure to check back another time as they will be back in stock soon again.

To buy from our shop the price is £7.99 plus postage, or you can buy a downloadable version from itunes.
SoundFjord are only selling to visitors of the gallery, so no postage, but still at £7.99.
